Data Journalism in the Context of Big Data and Journalism

Öz

The big data is thought to be a social, cultural, economic and technological phenomenon that is effective generally in communication discipline and journalism in particular. The increase in data had also caused a change in the news routines of contemporary journalism, and data journalism had become prevalent as a new and effective narrative type. In this research, in addition to the determination of the situation by a comprehensive literature review, the tweets which were shared with the #datajournalism hashtag are categorized by content analysis according to their sending locations, subjects and subjects of data journalism types with the theory of diffusion of innovations. As a result of the research, the impact of geography on the spread of innovations has been partially confirmed, and it has been found that Twitter is a tool that enables the circulation of technology related to data collection operations.

Öz

Büyük veri iletişim disiplini genelinde gazetecilik özelinde etkili olan toplumsal, kültürel, ekonomik ve teknolojik bir fenomen olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Verideki artış, çağdaş gazeteciliğin haber rutinlerinde de değişime neden olmuş, yeni ve etkili bir anlatı türü olarak veri gazeteciliği yaygınlık kazanmaya başlamıştır. Bu araştırmada alana ilişkin literatürün kapsamlı bir taraması ile durum tespiti yapılmasının yanı sıra yeniliklerin yayılımı kuramı bağlamında #datajournalism etiketi ile paylaşılan tweetler gönderildikleri ülkelere, konularına ve bu etiket altında paylaşılan veri gazeteciliği türlerinin temalarına göre kategorileştirilerek içerik analizi ile incelenmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda yeniliklerin yayılımında coğrafyanın etkisi kısmen doğrulanmış, Twitter’ın veri gazeteciliği ile ilgili teknolojileri dolaşıma sokup yaygınlaştıran bir araç olduğu bulgulanmıştır.
